what ezra says...

today we went to a place nearby where i thought ezra could ride his new bike. it was a bit of a bumpy ride in the center of this piazza type setting and boy was it HOT out there today at 1:00 in the caribbean.

mostly he rode through the 'tunnels' where the tiles were flat and gave him a smooth ride on his new balance bike. instead of getting him the traditional bike with training wheels, we got him this bike without pedals or training wheels so that he will learn to balance before he gets on a two wheeler.

truth be told the fancy bike with training wheels cost 4 times as much as this cool bike that was on sale and since we are only going to be living here for 10 more months (gasp) we don't want to acquire so many things that we will most likely end up giving away.

but, the point of this story was about the cute thing that ezra said when we were riding up the elevator on our way home. i just thought i'd tie it in with some photos of him on his new bike today. so riding up to the 7th floor of our hotel, he asked to have some cookies when we got home and i told him he could have a cookie after he ate some good food like broccoli that will make him grow up big and strong. right away he said, "cookies will make me grow big. please don't be bossy mom."

inside and out

this is what's been going on inside our place the last few days

because this is what's been going on outside the last few days

we've had thunder and lightning and lots and lots of rain. ezra instinctively hides out in his tent during the thunder and lightning episodes, quietly reading his books while snuggling in his blankets. playing with trains, blocks, play-dough, drawing, and painting, have also been keeping him entertained. michael always studies rain or shine, and i've been spending an inordinate amount of time on the computer making me contemplate a technology fast of sorts. i am just not sure how i could possibly even go a day without my computer. i think that alone says it's time. but, i think i will hold off until the weekend for better weather!

ezra and evan

on monday we had ezra's friend evan over. we collected these flowers from the hotel grounds to create these whimsical flower crowns i saw on artfulparent. hand in hand the two boys ran around the pathways saying, "i got one! i got one!" later when it was time to put the flowers along the crown, i couldn't get either interested in doing it. instead they spotted the watercolors on the counter and decided to paint. evan used three brushes and many colors, whereas ezra concentrated on using the color blue to paint the ocean around the sailboat he asked me to paint. i love the looks on their faces.

grapes and bananas were our snack and here you see their finished work.

imaginary friends

ezra's imagination has recently reached a new development. he has been including his imaginary friend maddie into our days for a while now. it started over a week ago when i thought she would leave as quietly as she came into our lives that evening, but it seems she's here to stay. maddie comes with us on our errands and ezra makes sure to buckle up her seat belt before getting into his car seat. he asks me to pick her up when michael picks up ezra. if i ask ezra if he wants a drink, he says maddie wants one too. after i help ezra to get dressed in the morning, he helps maddie to get dressed too. when i go to sit on the couch next to ezra, he will sometimes say, "no mommy, maddie is sitting there." when we cut out cookies today, ezra made sure that he pulled out a chair for maddie first.

maddie is a real friend turned imaginary and in fact, making cut-out cookies was something we did more than once with her together. she was a regular part of our first four months on the island, our first semester, her family's last. she was ezra's first baby love.

when he started this imaginary friendship with her, i was patient, understanding, and happy to play along, but at the same time, i felt a twinge of sadness that she was no longer here for him to play with, that we are not around other children more regularly like we would be in our old neighborhood full of other children at the neighborhood playground, and that we didn't have a little sister or brother for him to play with. but, i've remained positive and just played along and picked up maddie to put her into bed and carry up the stairs when we get back from a long day out at play.

not only do we have maddie in our days again, but ezra has taken to bringing his little elmo everywhere too.

we have left the house more than once without him and have gone right back up the two flights of stairs and into the elevator up to the 7th floor of our hotel to get elmo to bring with us wherever it is we are going. he has been to the store, the beach, and the rasta farm.

this new development in ezra's creative and imaginative play has been a subject for contemplation lately and i was glad when i sat down to read susan usha dermond's book, "calm and compassionate children" this evening. a few pages into my reading i read these lines in which she quotes a study conducted by a university professor and psychologist: "imaginary friends play an important role in a child's development. what we have shown in previous work is that having an imaginary companion is associated with advanced social understanding - being able to take the perspective of another person." this statement is supported alone by my child's way about playing with his imaginary friends. he is always thinking about them before himself and is taking the role of care-taker with them. one of my favorite parts of being a parent is just observing my child and watching him grow before my eyes. this new development in his awareness of self and others is truly exciting to me! one of my greatest goals as a parent is to raise a compassionate person. i am looking forward to each and every stage along the way of watching him grow into this extraordinary being.

gratitude sunday

abundance is not something we acquire. it is something we tune into." -wayne dyer

i read this quote on Shannon's blog and thought i would include it in a gratitude post. i haven't done one of these for a while, but I was reminded by her post how important it is to tune your awareness into the abundance in your life and into what is lacking. i usually am a person who keeps on the sunny side of life. but, we all complain once in a while about something we wish were different in our lives. those complaints usually never make me feel better. but, writing out a list of the things i am grateful for or speaking them aloud, always lifts my spirits. i am always grateful for the big things: my life, my loved ones, my health and safety and place in this world. but, for these posts, i will focus on what i am grateful for this week. these are the things this week that brought me into the light.

a beautiful, most perfect day at the beach.

our sweet baby friend kendall and her mama alicia

when ezra told michael and i in bed, "i want a little sister"

rahul and erica who study with michael

jon who comes to play with ezra like a loving member of our family

alexi and erin who were there to bring michael to rescue ezra and i when the car broke down

holly and lono who came along to the beach yesterday

the internet that keeps me connected to family and friends all over the world

this blog that has opened up a whole new enriching and interesting world to me
