fort amsterdam

michael had friday off from school and we had a great morning together visiting fort amsterdam and philipsburg. any outing with the three of us is usually pretty special on this island. ezra is always happiest when we are all together and his happiness is our happiness.

we saw the usual canons

i just love watching them together

this is pretty much all that's left of fort amsterdam

i found this rock formation that looks kind of like a bird

a view of great bay where the cruise ships come in to dock

raw goodness

here's some of the best of the raw meals and desserts we've been eating lately. we are both enjoying being raw most of the time and are surprised at how tasty and satisfying a raw meal really can be! people say i could never go raw because i love food too much, but i LOVE food and all that being raw has done for me is help me to love the foods that are good for me more. before transitioning to a mostly raw diet, we were vegans who tended to eat a lot of soy meat alternatives and whole grain products. we ate plenty of fruits and veggies, but rarely ate them in salads. i love that this way of eating has us eating salad everyday. we feel so much lighter and energized and have lost the bloated feeling we were getting from our previous diet of heavy whole grains and over indulging in soy products. now we indulge ourselves with delicious food all day long including the best part - raw desserts! here is our top favorite raw dessert that i found from averie at her blog.

she has many wonderful recipes that we love, including her raw vegan chocolate bars and raw vegan peanut butter cookie balls. there are many more that i look forward to making. the above pictures include recipes from a few sources, but several come from another favorite raw food blog called rawon10. if you think you need more fruits and veggies in your diet, go to either of these sites for inspiration! i've bought a few cookbooks, but i keep going back to these two great blogs for our daily (not bread) raw foods.

new friends

we have been spending time with friends at the beach this summer, here on st. maarten, where it is always summer. it truly doesn't feel any different from the last summer we spent here, or the seasons in between, except we are spending our time with different people than before. part of being in the AUC community of students and their families, is getting used to people coming and going. i purposely made sure we took ezra's first closest friends on the island to the airport when they left so he knew they were gone and so that i could tell him when the time came (and it has several times) that he asked after them that "they flew away on an airplane, remember?"
but even though we are sad some of our first friends are gone, we are happy to have made new friends including a sweet baby girl who was born on the island during her daddy's 3rd semester here. she is now six months old and is getting ready to leave in august.

her name is kendall, 'baby kendall' to ezra, and we both are in love with her. it has been so sweet to watch ezra be so gentle and caring with his first baby friend. he whispers to her in the car from his big boy car seat to her baby bucket seat that faces him and pets her head softly when she's fallen asleep on the way home from the beach. when we are at the beach together, he wants to be where she is - in the water or on the sand.

one trip we took together to friar's bay, kendall had just started to crawl and was slowly making her way to follow ezra through the sand.

she was so proud of herself! and ezra loved having a little follower. it was amazing to witness her newfound skill and heartwarming to hear ezra ask her to follow him.

she came over the next week and was crawling more and ezra wanted to crawl again too. he showed off his commando crawling skills while she worked on the basics.

it is endearing to me to see how he wants to do what she does, even though he is the 'big boy' and she is the baby. when we went for a walk together he wanted to have on his mosquito net just like baby kendall did, when usually it is an unwanted shield that i have to enforce upon him.

maybe kendall can get ezra to eat his vegetables before she leaves!
